T5 LED Tube Lights: Miniature, Standard and High-Output Replacements
A T5 LED tube light provides linear illumination in a slim lamp format. T5 identifies a nominal 5/8-inch tube diameter, while the complete LED assembly’s dimensions depend on its construction. A T5 LED bulb can serve compact display lighting, under-cabinet fixtures, or larger commercial fluorescent retrofits.
T5 light bulbs include miniature formats and replacements for both standard-output and high-output fluorescent systems. T5 HO LED replacements address higher-output applications, but T5 diameter alone does not establish brightness or make a lamp inherently brighter than T8.
Key Advantages of T5 LED Lighting
The T5 format supports compact linear lighting as well as higher-output commercial applications.
- Output Options: Standard-output replacements suit general linear lighting, while high output T5 replacements address applications requiring more light. Compare lumens rather than assuming every T5 lamp has the same performance.
- Miniature G5 Base: The G5 miniature bi-pin connection has nominal pin spacing of 5 mm. This identifies the base arrangement, not the lamp’s operating voltage or wiring method.
- Energy Savings: A 25W LED replacement for a 54W fluorescent lamp reduces lamp wattage by approximately 54%. Miniature replacements can also reduce consumption, such as a 4W LED replacing an 8W fluorescent lamp.
- Slim Profile: The nominal 5/8-inch format supports compact fixtures and closely spaced lamp layouts. Actual replacement dimensions determine the available clearance.
T5 Compatibility, Uses, and Industrial Applications
Replacement selection starts with the fluorescent lamp designation. Similar-looking G5 lamps can have different lengths, output requirements, and operating arrangements.
- Standard and HO Systems: Four-foot fluorescent applications include 28W standard-output and 54W HO lamps. A T5 HO LED replacement should address the original HO application rather than being selected by base and length alone.
- Miniature Lengths: Compact formats include six-, nine-, twelve-, and twenty-one-inch lamps, serving replacements for fluorescent designations such as F4T5, F6T5, F8T5, and F13T5. These formats provide linear light in under-cabinet fixtures and display cases.
- Longer Tubes: Nominal two-, three-, and four-foot lamps serve larger linear fixtures. A nominal four-foot T5 replacement can measure approximately 45–46 inches, so the size label should not be read as an exact 48-inch dimension.
- Installation Options: Type A lamps use compatible ballasts, while Type B lamps bypass the ballast. As with T8 LED bulbs, single-ended and double-ended Type B designs require their specified power connections and lampholders.
- Voltage and Controls: Direct-wire designs can support 120–277V or 120–347V operation. Dimming is a separate capability, and some dimmable lamps support phase-cut controls only at 120V.
- Warehouses and Industrial: High output T5 replacements provide linear illumination for warehouses and manufacturing areas. Lamp lumens, fixture optics, and mounting height together determine the lighting delivered to the workspace.
- Color and Enclosures: Fixed and selectable color temperatures support different visual environments. Enclosed display cases and covered fixtures require an appropriate lamp rating, separate from color temperature or base type.
Planning a T5 LED Retrofit
The broader LED tube lights collection explains other tube families and replacement formats. A miniature bi-pin tube and a longer T5 LED bulb may share a base designation while serving very different fixtures.
For compact displays or commercial interiors, match the original lamp designation and installation arrangement first. Then compare T5 LED bulbs by lumens, color temperature, rated life, and control requirements to establish the desired lighting result.
