The DMX System: Controllers & Decoders

The DMX light controller acts as the "brain," sending data across 512 channels. Each channel has a value (0-255) representing an intensity level. However, an LED strip cannot read this signal directly.

A DMX decoder is required to translate. The decoder is assigned to specific channels (e.g., channels 1-3 for an RGB strip) and converts the DMX data into the low-voltage PWM signal that tells the individual diodes on the LED strip exactly how to behave.
