What Is a Ceiling or Wall Mount Motion Sensor?
A ceiling or wall mount motion sensor is a standalone sensor head installed remotely to provide optimal detection coverage in large, open, or irregularly shaped spaces where a standard wall switch sensor would be ineffective. By positioning the sensor head in the most strategic location — such as the center of a ceiling or high in a corner — these units achieve coverage that no wall box placement can match.
The Power Pack System
Most commercial ceiling and wall sensors operate as part of a two-component system. The sensor head mounts on the ceiling or wall and handles motion detection, while a separate power pack — installed above the ceiling or in a junction box — contains the relay that switches the lighting circuit on and off. Low-voltage wiring connects the two, allowing a single sensor to control large banks of lights, or multiple sensors to feed into one power pack for complex multi-zone coverage.
Ceiling Mount vs. Wall Mount
- Ceiling Mount: Provides a full 360° field of view — ideal for the center of open-plan offices, cafeterias, libraries, and large commercial rooms. Standard mounting height is 8–12 feet.
- Wall or Corner Mount: Suited for long, linear spaces like hallways, corridors, and warehouse aisles, with detection ranges of 30–50 feet and coverage angles of 110–180°.
