A ceiling or wall mount motion sensor is a standalone sensor head installed remotely to provide optimal detection coverage in large, open, or irregularly shaped spaces where a single wall switch sensor would be ineffective. These are the professional's choice for ensuring reliable motion detection throughout an entire commercial or institutional area.

Superior Coverage for Large and Complex Spaces

The key advantage of this system is superior coverage. By placing the sensor head in the most strategic location—like the center of a ceiling or high in a corner—it can overlook a large area without being limited by the location of a standard wall box.

The Power Pack System

These remote sensors work as part of a two-component system:

  1. The Sensor: The "eye" of the system, this unit is mounted on the ceiling or wall and does the actual motion detection.
  2. The Power Pack: The "brain" and the "muscle," this separate module contains the power supply for the sensor and the heavy-duty relay that switches the lighting circuit on and off. The sensor is wired to the power pack using low-voltage wiring.

This system allows a single sensor to control a large bank of lights and enables multiple sensors to be wired to the same power pack to cover even larger or more complex areas.

Choosing Your Mount

  1. Ceiling Mount: Typically provides a full 360-degree field of view, making it ideal for the center of open-plan offices, cafeterias, libraries, and other large, open rooms.
  2. Wall Mount: Usually mounted high on a wall or in a corner, this style is perfect for looking down long, linear spaces like hallways, corridors, and warehouse aisles.

The Professional Solution for Complete Coverage

When reliable motion detection in a large commercial space is critical, a remote ceiling or wall mount sensor system is the definitive solution. Ensure total coverage for your commercial space. Find high-performance ceiling and wall mount motion sensors and power packs at Bees Lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of a ceiling mounted motion sensor?

A ceiling mounted motion sensor provides a 360-degree field of view, allowing it to cover a much larger area than a standard wall switch. This makes it the most effective way to automate lighting in large rooms or open-concept offices.

How high should a ceiling/wall sensor be mounted?

Most ceiling sensors are designed for mounting heights between 8 and 12 feet. For warehouses with higher ceilings, you may need a specialized high mount sensor rated for heights up to 40 feet.

What is a 360 degree sensor?

It is a sensor with a lens designed to detect motion in all directions (a full circle) around the device. This ensures that no matter where someone enters the room, the occ sensor will trigger the lights.

Do these sensors require a Power Pack?

Many low-voltage commercial ceiling/wall sensor units require a separate "Power Pack." The power pack sits above the ceiling, converts line voltage to low voltage for the sensor, and contains the relay that actually switches the lights.

Can one ceiling sensor control multiple lights?

Yes. A single ceiling/wall sensor (or power pack) can control an entire circuit of lights, provided the total load does not exceed the relay's rating.

What is the detection range of a wall switch sensor?

Standard high-mount wall sensors often have a range of 30 to 50 feet with a coverage angle of 110 to 180 degrees, depending on the specific model.

Can I use these sensors with LED high bays?

Yes. Our sensors are fully compatible with LED technology. For industrial fixtures, you may also want to explore our fixture mounted sensors.

Are these sensors weather-resistant?

Standard ceiling and wall sensors are for indoor use. For exterior security, please visit our outdoor motion sensors collection.

How do I adjust the sensitivity?

Most ceiling/wall sensor models feature small internal dials (potentiometers) or DIP switches that allow you to adjust the sensitivity and the time delay (how long the lights stay on).

Can I override the sensor manually?

Since these are often mounted out of reach, manual overrides are usually handled by a separate wall switch wired into the circuit, or via a remote control for certain digital models.
