Collection: Wet Rated & Shower Recessed Lighting

Wet rated recessed lighting is engineered with sealed housings and moisture-resistant gaskets to withstand direct water contact — making it the code-required choice for shower stalls and bathroom ceilings above the wet zone. Unlike damp-rated fixtures, wet-rated downlights are fully sealed against splashing and steam, ensuring long-term reliability in the most demanding environments.

Wet rated recessed lighting is designed with specialized gaskets and sealed housings to prevent water and vapor from entering the electrical components. While "damp rated" fixtures are suitable for humid areas like laundry rooms, a wet location rated fixture is required anywhere the light may be subject to splashing or direct water, such as a shower stall. These fixtures are essential for bringing beautiful, reliable illumination to any area where moisture is a concern, from a recessed shower light to bathroom ceiling fixtures. For new construction installs, pair with code-compliant recessed lighting housings.

Wet Rated vs. Damp Rated: Understanding the Difference

Choosing the correct location rating is crucial for safety, code compliance, and the fixture's longevity.

  • Wet Rated: This is the highest level of protection. Fixtures with this rating are built to withstand direct contact with water. A wet location recessed lighting fixture is required for installations inside a shower or anywhere subject to direct water spray.
  • Damp Rated: This rating is for fixtures that will be in a moist environment but will not have direct contact with water. This is suitable for recessed bathroom lighting outside the shower zone, covered patios, and basements.

Shower Rated Recessed Lighting: The Best Solution for Bathrooms

Lighting a shower requires more than just a standard bulb. Recessed shower lights must be wet-rated to handle the constant steam and direct spray of a modern bathroom. Our selection includes both traditional recessed can light trims with glass lenses and modern, integrated canless wafer lights that provide a flush, contemporary look while maintaining a watertight seal. For multi-family or commercial shower installations, also consider fire rated recessed lights to meet ceiling assembly requirements.

Recessed Lighting Color Temperature Guide

The right Kelvin (K) rating is critical for both safety and aesthetics in wet environments:

3000K (Soft White) 4000K (Cool White) 5000K (Daylight)
Light Appearance Warm Yellow Glow Clean Neutral White Bright Bluish-White
Best Applications Ideal for creating a spa-like, relaxing atmosphere in master bathrooms The professional choice for vanity and shower areas where high visibility is needed for grooming Best for commercial pool areas and high-ceiling wet spaces

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between damp rated and wet rated?

It depends on the location. If the light is directly inside the shower or tub enclosure where it will get sprayed, you absolutely need a wet rated recessed light. For the general ceiling area outside the shower, a damp-rated light is usually sufficient.

Damp rated fixtures are for moist air (like a bathroom ceiling), while wet rated recessed lighting is designed for areas where water may physically touch the fixture, such as inside a shower or outdoors in the rain.

Do I need a wet-rated light inside a shower?

It means the fixture has passed Underwriters Laboratories (UL) testing to prove its enclosure can prevent water from rain or sprinklers from energizing its electrical parts. This certification is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) for these locations.

Yes. Building codes typically require a wet-location-rated fixture for any light installed directly over a tub or shower to prevent electrical hazards and moisture damage.

Can I use canless wafer lights in a shower?

Not automatically, but it's very common. An IC rating (Insulation Contact) means the fixture can be safely buried in insulation. Most of our wet location recessed lighting options are also IC-rated, making them suitable for insulated ceilings in bathrooms and outdoor soffits. Always check the product specifications to confirm.

Yes, as long as the specific model is labeled as wet-rated. Many canless recessed lights feature a sealed design that makes them perfect for shower installations.

Are wet-rated lights also IC Rated?

Yes. A wet rating is a higher standard of safety. You can always use a fixture with a higher moisture rating in an area that requires a lower one (e.g., a wet-rated light can be used in a damp or dry location), but you can never do the reverse.

Many are, but not all. If your shower light will be in direct contact with attic insulation, you must ensure it is both wet-rated and IC (Insulation Contact) rated.

How many lumens do I need for a bathroom?

For a standard sauna (high dry heat), you need a fixture specifically rated for high temperatures, not just moisture. For a steam shower, you need a fixture that is both wet-rated and vapor-proof or "steam-rated." A standard wet-rated fixture is sealed against liquid water but not necessarily against penetrating water vapor. Always check the product's specific approvals for steam room use.

For general bathroom use, look for 800 to 1,100 lumens. If the light is specifically for a small shower stall, 600 to 800 lumens is usually sufficient. Refer to our footcandle guide for precise needs.

What recessed lighting is best for bathroom ceilings?

For bathroom recessed lighting, the right rating depends on fixture placement. Inside the shower or directly above the tub within the wet zone (typically within 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically of the water source per NEC guidelines), a wet rated fixture is required. Outside the wet zone but still in the bathroom — such as over a vanity or in the main ceiling area — a damp rated fixture is acceptable. For a clean, modern look, canless wafer lights with a wet-rated IP rating are the most popular choice for bathroom recessed lighting today, as they install without a housing can and provide a fully flush, sealed surface. Most 4-inch and 6-inch wet-rated downlights work well in standard bathroom ceiling heights of 8–10 feet.

What is the best layout for bathroom recessed lighting?

For a balanced look, space lights evenly around the perimeter and place one dedicated wet-rated light in the center of the shower. See our Recessed Lighting Layout Guide for more tips.

Are these fixtures dimmable?

Most of our LED wet-rated fixtures are dimmable, allowing you to create a soft "night light" effect in bathrooms. Ensure you use a compatible LED-rated dimmer switch.

How do I maintain wet-rated fixtures?

Because they are sealed, maintenance is minimal. Occasionally wipe the exterior trim and lens with a damp cloth to remove dust or mineral deposits from water spray.

What IP rating do I need for shower and bathroom recessed lighting?

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define how well a fixture resists solids and liquids. For recessed lighting in wet environments, the second digit is what matters most: IP44 indicates protection against water splashing from any direction and is generally acceptable for damp-rated bathroom locations outside the shower zone. IP65 or higher is required for fixtures inside the shower or directly above a tub, as it indicates full protection against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Most wet-rated recessed lights in our catalog carry an IP65 rating, making them code-compliant for direct shower installation. When in doubt, always verify the fixture's IP rating on the product spec sheet before purchasing.
