An outdoor motion sensor is a durable, weather-resistant device designed to detect movement and automatically activate lights, enhancing security and safety around your property's exterior. Whether integrated into a floodlight or installed as a standalone unit, these sensors are a powerful first line of defense, providing illumination exactly when and where it's needed.

Security, Safety, and Peace of Mind

The primary function of an outdoor motion sensor is to enhance security. The sudden illumination from a motion-activated floodlight is a powerful deterrent to potential intruders. Beyond security, these sensors provide crucial safety benefits, automatically lighting up dark driveways, pathways, and staircases as you approach, preventing trips and falls.

Built to Withstand the Elements

Outdoor sensors are engineered for durability.

  • Weather-Resistant Construction: They feature sealed gaskets and UV-stabilized plastic housings to protect the sensitive electronics from rain, snow, humidity, and sun damage.
  • Adjustable Settings: To ensure reliable performance, outdoor sensors have adjustable controls for sensitivity (to prevent false triggers from small animals or wind-blown branches), detection range, and the on-time duration (how long the lights stay on after motion stops).

These sensors are most commonly found integrated into floodlights and wall packs, but can also be purchased as standalone units to control entire circuits of landscape or soffit lighting.

Your Watchful Eye in the Dark

An outdoor motion sensor provides automated security and safety, giving you peace of mind that your property is always monitored. It's a smart, effective, and energy-efficient way to light up the night. Enhance your home security with reliable illumination. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an outdoor motion sensor?

An outdoor motion sensor is a weather-resistant device that detects movement and triggers exterior lighting, such as floodlights, to enhance security and convenience.

Can I use any bulb with an exterior motion sensor?

Yes, as long as the total wattage does not exceed the sensor's rating. For the best energy savings, we recommend using LED bulbs. If your sensor has a "dim-to-bright" feature, ensure your LED bulbs are "dimmable."

Why does my outdoor motion sensor stay on all the time?

This is often caused by the sensor being in "Manual Override" mode. Try turning the power off at the wall switch for 30 seconds and then back on to reset it. If it persists, the "SENS" (Sensitivity) or "TIME" settings may be too high.

Can wind or branches trigger a security sensor?

Yes, particularly with high-sensitivity settings or microwave sensors. If you have a lot of moving foliage, a PIR sensor with adjusted sensitivity is the best way to reduce false triggers.

What is the range of a typical outdoor security light sensor?

Most residential sensors have a detection range of 30 to 70 feet, with a field of view ranging from 110 to 240 degrees.

Do I need a neutral wire to install an outdoor sensor switch?

Most hard-wired outdoor motion sensor units require a neutral wire (white) to power the internal sensor head. Always check your wiring before beginning installation.

Can I install a motion sensor on my existing porch light?

Yes. We carry "screw-in" or "add-on" sensors that can be wired into existing fixtures, though for the best security, a dedicated fixture with an integrated sensor is usually preferred.

What does "Dusk to Dawn Motion" mean?

This means the sensor includes a photocell that disables the motion detection during the day, so your outdoor security light doesn't waste energy by turning on when the sun is out.

Is an IP65 sensor waterproof?

IP65 sensor units are highly water-resistant and designed for direct rain exposure. However, they should not be submerged in water.

At what height should I mount my sensor?

The ideal mounting height is between 7 and 10 feet. Mounting too high can create "blind spots" near the base of the wall, while mounting too low can reduce the overall detection distance.
