There is no single national rule; it depends on your local fire code. While red is the traditional color in most of the United States, many states and cities (like parts of the West Coast) mandate green because it is associated with "go" and safety. You must check with your local fire marshal before purchasing.

A battery backup exit sign (the most common type) has an internal battery that powers the sign for 90 minutes when the building loses electricity. An AC-only exit sign does not have a battery; it is designed for buildings that have a central emergency generator that kicks in during an outage.

An edge-lit exit sign is a premium, architectural fixture where the lettering is etched onto a clear acrylic panel and illuminated from the top or side. They look much sleeker than standard plastic box signs and are popular in hotels, offices, and lobbies.

According to NFPA 101, exit signs should be mounted so that no point in the exit access corridor is more than 100 feet from the nearest sign. While there is no strict minimum height for the sign itself (other than being visible), it is typically mounted above doors (approx. 80 inches high). Low-level exit signs (mounted near the floor) are sometimes required in addition to high signs for smoke visibility.

LED exit signs are extremely durable. The LED strips inside can last for 10 years or more without needing replacement. However, the backup battery typically lasts 3 to 5 years and will need to be replaced to ensure the sign passes its annual 90-minute test.
